Dreams of Adam
Hans Diebschlag's association with the car manufacturer Opel dates back to the 1950's. His father worked at the Opel factory in Rüsselsheim which was the town Hans spent most of his childhood and adolescence.
In the late 80's Hans began work on his Rüsselsheim paintings. Firstly dealing with the city and Opel of the 50's and 60's in the 1993 exhibition "Rucksicht auf Rüsselsheim". Secondly dealing with the lives of the town's working families in the 'inner circle' pictures. Both inner and outer circle pictures comprising over 30 paintings were shown in the autumn 1997 exhibition "Erinnerungen" a number of these can be seen in the Ruesselsheim galleries.
In 1999 "Apotheosis" a large oil/tempera painting of approximately 250cm by 180cm, commissioned by Adam Opel AG was unveiled in the newly built Adam Opel Haus in Rüsselsheim. In 2006 another commission from Opel saw the creation of six watercolours on the theme of the American Dream and the Opel GT sports car to coincide with the US launch of the new model Opel GT.
The film Die Diebschlag Monologe (2008) directed by Michael Farquharson is a film portrait that looks at the artist, Rüsselsheim and Opel against a continuing series of his work illustrating the triumphs and frustrations of Opel and the lives of the Rüsselsheimer employees. Hans has long been interested in the relationship between art and advertising. In 2004 he began to work on a number of pictures featuring classic Opel models such as the Kapitan, Diplomat and Kadett. These pictures were based on or incorporated original Opel advertisments but with the addition of historic or contemporary cultural icons. More recent pictures provide a contemporary commentary on Opel's production and future following the financial troubles of the parent company General Motors and mooted sale of GM Europe. The exhibition "The Dreams of Adam" opened on 14th April 2011 and runs until 15th May see Exhibitions for more information.
