India Inspired Work
India has long held a fascination for Hans and it is a strong influence and inspiration in his work.
From early days Hans was intrigued by the pictures of the paintings at Ajanta and other Indian art that he saw in his grandfather's books. Later in life he became interested in India's rich spiritual life and living saints.
Hans's first visit to India was in 1998 when he made an overland trip by bus from London to Vrindavan. Although the bus continued to Kathmandu Hans decided to stay on in Vrindavan. He has since made two more visits to India in 2006 and 2009 and is always dreaming and planning for the next visit.
Many of the recent paintings in this gallery are influenced by Hans's reading of an Indian treatise on art. See the news article Inspired by India for more details. Hans has also been researching and reading about Ragamala painting, the visual interpretations of Indian musical moods that frequently show romantic or devotional situations.
The overland bus journey to India was the inspiration for the Hanuman series of paintings so visit the Hanuman gallery to see more paintings in which India is an influence. Also the Milarepa paintings, a series of 12 pictures telling the life story of the Tibetan Buddhist saint may also be of interest so check out the Milarepa gallery as well.

Upside Down Tree (2009)
Oil on canvas on board
49 x 42 cm
Sold
'The idea is the feeling of what I saw in Sanchi and the theme is the upside down tree of the Bhagavad Gita. The symbol of the tree, the roots are the gods in the clouds and the branches spread down to earth and become more and more material. But over time into this Indian theme came Bacchus and Diana and an Italian panorama so becomes a lovely mixture of cross cultural appropriation' HD 2009
